Visceral fat: the metabolically loud guest at the table

Not all fat behaves the same

Subcutaneous fat (under skin) is mostly storage; visceral fat (around organs) is endocrinologically loud — draining into the portal vein, driving insulin resistance, inflammation, and lipid problems. Waist-to-height ratio is the cheapest proxy for how much of it you carry, which is why clinicians increasingly reach for the tape before the BMI chart.

The good news about visceral fat

It is the most behavior-responsive depot: deficits, exercise, sleep, and alcohol reduction mobilize it first — waist circumference often shrinks measurably before scale weight moves much. The fat that causes the most metabolic trouble is also the fastest to leave. Body recomp in reverse: the high-risk tissue has the shortest lease.

The measurement plan

Monthly waist measurement at the navel, same conditions, tracked against half your height. Add the Navy method quarterly for the composition picture. Ignore the bathroom scale's weekly opinions — it averages the wrong things. The tape sees the story the scale is too blunt to tell.
